RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A Chesterfield man is on trial for the murder of 9-year-old Markiya Dickson, who was struck and killed by a bullet during a Memorial Day cookout in 2019.

Jesus Turner has been charged with first-degree murder. A two-day trial began Tuesday.

In May of 2019, Dickson was at the cookout with her family at Carter Jones Park when shots rang out. She was struck and later died at a local hospital. An 11-year-old boy and a man survived after being hit in the crossfire.

Two other suspects, Jermaine Davis and Quinshawn Betts were both found guilty last year and sentenced to prison. Betts got 22 years in prison. Davis has yet to be sentenced but a jury recommended he get 33 years.

The jury trial for Turner will take place at Richmond Circuit Court.

UPDATE 11:00 a.m.

Jury selection took more than three hours. Opening arguments began at 1 pm.

Prosecutors argue out of the 23 shots fired, seven came from Turner’s gun. “At the conclusion of this trial I ask that you hold the defendant accountable for murdering Markiya,” a prosecutor stated.

However so far, the defense argues there’s no physical evidence that Turner was even there.

“What this entire case comes down to is not any physical evidence, but the credibility, reliability, and consistency of the stories that you are gonna hear,” said Turner’s defense attorney.

UPDATE 3:15 p.m.

The prosecution’s key witness, another man involved with the shootout, who previously testified during the trials for Davis and Betts refused to answer most questions for more than an hour. The witness previously stated that he shot back in self-defense in the park the day Markiya was killed.

The witness is now stating that he’s already answered the questions enough times. Despite the prosecution explaining that there was a new jury, he does not seem to be changing his mind.

UPDATE 5:30 p.m.

Whether the witness’ testimony will be used is up in the air. He was excused.

The trial wrapped up for the day. More witness testimony is expected on Wednesday at 9 a.m.
