NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Officials have recovered a body near the Ocean View Fishing Pier, the site where a 12-year-old North Carolina boy went missing this past weekend.

Norfolk dispatchers received an emergency call just before 9 p.m. after someone spotted the body in the water near the pier at 414 W. Ocean View Avenue.

Family members reported the boy missing on Saturday at 7 p.m. after the boy and two other children were in distress in the water. Family members were able to rescue two of the three children.

Officials say it all happened about 100 yards from the pier.

Multiple agencies, including Norfolk police, Norfolk Fire and Rescue, the Virginia Department of Inland Fisheries and the U.S. Coast Guard assisted in the search, both above and below water, but the search was eventually called off around 4 p.m. Sunday.

A woman who said she’s the boy’s aunt identified him as Davieon Craig Askew. She said the 7th grader was taken to the beach as a late birthday present.

Officials have yet to confirm whether it is Askew’s body, and have classified the case as an undetermined death. They say they’ll release the identity pending notification of kin.
