Police: Distracted driving may have caused deadly Prince George County wreck

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — One person was killed in another was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash in Prince George County on Wednesday.

The crash occurred at around 3:50 p.m. in the 4300 block of Mount Sinai Road. According to police, a black Ford two-door sedan was traveling north when it skidded off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree.

The driver — who has been identified as 39-year-old William Besley of Hopewell — was flown to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. One passenger — identified as 37-year-old Clarence Thomas of Chesterfield County — was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Investigators say cell phone usage may have been a contributing factor in the crash and that neither occupant was wearing a seat belt. 

Charges may be pursued as police continue to investigate.
