RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Police say a 39-year-old man was killed after wrecking a stolen vehicle into a light pole in Richmond.

He was identified as Keith D. Haines, of the 1800 block of Sussex Street.

Police say just before 9:30 p.m. Friday, an officer witnessed a vehicle driving southbound on 14th Street near the Mayo Bridge. Authorities learned the vehicle was reported stolen.

Once the officer attempted to pull Haines over, police say the vehicle sped off onto the bridge.

Haines, the lone occupant of the vehicle, lost control of the car at the south end of the bridge, according to police. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a traffic light pole.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Richmond Police’s Crash Team responded to the incident and continues to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call Crash Team Investigator J. Peterson at (804) 646-1511.
