Residents evacuated at a senior housing community in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Fire Department was called to a senior housing community Saturday night for reports of a fire.

Richmond Fire arrived at Dominion Place on 1025 W. Grace St. where heavy smoke and fire was coming from the building.

Authorities said when they arrived they responded to a fourth-floor single apartment fire.

Richmond Fire Battalion Chief Richard Lewis said there were two people in the building who were treated for smoke inhalation.

Authorities said 60 people were evacuated from the building and some residents went to a nearby building in order to stay warm.

8News spoke with Viola Taylor, a resident at Dominion Place, who said the smoke was so thick she was just happy to get out.

“I was trying to get out and I had a little difficulty getting my coat,” she said. “But we made it. Thank God. We made it out.”

Fire crews are still investigating and said they will work with residents who may be displaced.
