RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Fire departments across the Commonwealth do a great job responding quickly when called upon, but the sprinklers people see in their office or store could be a big help for before help arrives.
Fires can move quickly and be deadly, but in a room with a sprinkler system only minor damage is done.
8News spent time with Richmond fire officials to get a better understanding of the benefits of having a sprinkler system in your home.
“It’s a great investment to have which certainly enhances the safety of your family and your home,” said Earl Dyer, Captain of the Richmond Fire Department.
On average, the cost of installing a sprinkler system is $1.35 per square foot.
In a sprinkler demonstration for 8News, Richmond Fire along with VCU Safety and Risk Management illustrated the life and death circumstances of having proper safety precautions.
“It gives you that extra added time to get out. A lot of people panic and they forget things and stuff like that. Just remember your plan and execute your plan to get out of the house,” said Bill Willis, from VCU Safety and Risk Management, “have that early detection and a sprinkler system will help you survive better too.”
A fire doubles in size every 20 seconds, with a sprinkler, the damage to a room is contained in a small corner. Without a sprinkler system, the room during the demonstration was a total loss.
Sprinklers will cause water damage, but it can help prevent significant loss of property and is easier to install in new homes.
