200-year-old home in Jackson Ward partially collapses

Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A two-story home in the Jackson Ward neighborhood partially collapsed with people inside late Wednesday night.

It happened at a home located at the intersection of N. 1st and E. Duval streets. The back side of the home crumbled to the ground at around 11:30 p.m., and investigators are still working to determine what caused the collapse.

“One of the guys that lives here, he actually said the homeowner had plans to get it renovated or get a big crack in the foundation done prior, so I guess nature took it’s course before she could get it fixed,” local resident Leondra Finney told 8News.

Officials have blocked off much of the area due to uncertainty of when the rest of the building could fall.

Residents hope Thursday’s incident leads to other buildings being inspected.

“I’m pretty sure the inspectors and all are gonna come around and take a look at some of the houses around here because of the age,” Michael Lemon said.
