RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond Police has launched its first homicide investigation of 2019 after a man was found dead on a porch in the city’s Southside Wednesday afternoon.
Officers were initially called to 4500 block of Norborne Road, off Warwick Road, for reports of a man down on the front porch of a home. Officers arrived and found the man suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.
Tearful faces could be seen throughout the area for the victim, identified by family members as 43-year-old Michael Halford. On Thursday, Richmond Police confirmed Halford was the man killed in the shooting.
“My cousin was like this on his front porch, like ‘man, why you doing this or man, what you want?'” Halford’s cousin, Makeia Terry, said.
Terry is a cousin of the victim but says she grew up calling him her brother.
“He was a father, he was a brother, he was a nephew, he was an uncle, he was a good person,” she said. “If you needed anything he would give it to you.”
Richmond Police’s interim police chief said the first death of the year is upsetting for all in the community.
“It doesn’t matter what day it is,” interim chief William C. Smith said, “this is as troubling now as it is any other day.”
“A good person died today,” Terry told 8News. “A very special person and whoever did, it would be best for them to just go ahead and turn themselves in.”
No other details, including any suspect description, has been released at this time.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
