Police ID suspect who barricaded himself inside Omni Richmond Hotel

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Police have identified the suspect who barricaded himself inside a room at the Omni Richmond hotel in Shockoe Slip for hours.

Police tell 8News they were dispatched shortly after 11 a.m. to the hotel, located at the intersection of 12th and East Cary streets, for reports of a subject with possible injuries who had barricaded himself inside a high-rise room. 

When officers arrived, they were directed to the 15th floor of the building where a window had been busted out. 

Negotiators were called to speak to the suspect, who has since been identified as 48-year-old Charles W. McKinney of Richmond.

During an hour of negotiations, police say McKinney caused significant damage to the hotel. When he stopped communicating with negotiators, officers entered the room and took him into custody. 

The hotel’s rooftop pool was evacuated as the incident was ongoing.

A section of 12th Street near Canal Street was blocked off for hours as police investigated. 

McKinney was transported to a local hospital for a medical examination. 

Police are still investigating and have not released any further details.
