RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Chase Tunnell loves visiting Belle Isle.
“Best place in Richmond to run,” insists Tunnel.
But on Friday, mixed in with the park’s scenic views were the charred scars from suspected arsons.
“First of all, it’s somebody with nothing better to do,” says Tunnell. “Not thinking about how others enjoy the place and how it just complicates the enjoyment of the parks system. What they’re doing out here for people having fun. They have to combat that kind of thing instead.” There have been several structures set on fire recently. Five wooden trash and recycle bins, along with two porta-potties.
“I think it’s awful. This park is the pride of Richmond in my view,” adds runner Jack Martin. He’s frustrated someone wants to ruin a place so many others treasure.
“I’m here a couple times a week and I just can’t understand why anyone would think it’s anything but just an awesome place to be,” adds Martin. Richmond Police are investigating the series of fires. They want to stop the threat of more damage on Belle Isle and beyond.
Some of the vandalism happened at the 22nd Street tower.
“I think it’s really unfortunate,” Harrison Lakehomer added. “When you get areas like this in a city, it’s nice to keep them as pristine as possible.”
