Richmond City Council to vote on budget plan to fund RPS

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond City Council put forward its plan to fully fund Richmond Public Schools on Monday.

Council members approved a 50-cent cigarette tax, however, the plan will not increase the real estate tax rate.

The budget will put forth $16 million for paving streets and will expand GRTC routes in the east end and southside.

Mayor Levar Stoney wrote on Twitter that the council’s decisions “are all wins” for Richmond:

The Richmond City Council will officially vote on the plan May 13.
