RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Fire Department responded to a fire with thick black smoke in the air on East Main Street in downtown Richmond.

According to Capitol Police, the fire was at 909 East Main Street. Police and units from the Richmond Fire Department were both on scene. Roads nearby are still closed and anyone currently downtown is asked to avoid the area of East Main Street and 9th Street.

According to the Richmond Fire Department, the fire was contained to the roof of the building, and unknown construction debris was on fire on the roof. It is currently unknown what caused the fire, no injuries have been reported and there were no evacuations of neighboring buildings.

The fire was initially a two-alarm fire, but a third alarm fire call was prompted in order to relieve some of the crews on scene.

20 units and a total of 70 personnel were on scene during the fire, and the Henrico and Chesterfield Fire Department came in to assist. Authorities hope to have the scene cleared up soon.
