RICHMOND, Va., (WRIC) -- Thousands took over the Boulevard in Richmond for the 15th annual Shamrock the Block.
It is considered the start of outdoor festival season in Richmond.
Bands including Cracker Jackson performed Saturday.
Several local restaurants and food vendors were on hand for folks to purchase meals and drinks.
Families took over the Boulevard along with their pets to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.
"Its been great," said Richmond resident Kendall Haley. "I've been having fun, enjoying myself, there's a lot of people. The crowd is great."
But Virginia State Police offer this advice to those taking part in the festivities.
"Just find a safe ride home, don't get in the car if you've been drinking," said VSP trooper William Moleins. "Our goal is to promote highway safety and ensure that you get home to your loved ones and you have a fun time while you're out there."
Trooper Moleins tells 8News drivers should find a ride home from St. Patrick's Day celebrations instead of getting behind the wheel.
"Put those keys in your pocket, don't put it in the car cause once you get behind that car you're impaired driving at that point and that's a DUI," said Trooper Moleins. "It's a good avenue to take a Lyft or an Uber or find a sober driver cause you do not want to spend your night with me."
VSP also warn heading out to a party to be on the lookout for impaired drivers.
"Somebody's going to make the mistake of getting behind the wheel and their going to end up driving. And a vehicle against a pedestrian is just not a pretty sight," said Trooper Moleins.
