‘The community is in shock’: Daughter finds father shot to death inside Blackstone home

NOTTOWAY COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A homicide investigation is underway after a woman found her 82-year-old father shot and killed inside his Nottoway County home on Monday.

Authorities say the daughter of 82-year-old Leslie Crews found him dead at his home in the 600 block of Poplar Lawn Road in Blackstone.

Neighbors told 8News that Crews had been shot in the head. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond ruled that Crews died from a gunshot wound to the upper body.

An investigation by Virginia State Police has led to the recovery of some of the missing items from Crews’ home and the identification of a person of interest. According to a release from State Police on Dec. 10, the person of interest in the case is “currently incarcerated at the Piedmont Regional Jail.”

Crews was loved by not only his neighbors — but also his church.

“The community is in shock,” one of Crews’ neighbors, Colonel Hobbs, said. “He was just a good person. Quiet man who went about his everyday work.”

“It’s going to sting for a long time, to be honest with you,” added Bruce Rhew, pastor at Grace Baptist Temple. “I’m not sure this is something that people will get over.”

Rhew has been serving Grace Baptist Temple for 15 years and said he never thought this past Sunday would be the last time he would see one of his loyal parishioners.

“I said, ‘brother Crews? Hang on a second,’ and I went up to him, and he turned with a smile on his face and I shook his hand, and I said, ‘Good to see you today and have a great week.'”

Police say several items were also taken from Crews’ home, and that they are investigating his death as a homicide. Investigators believe it to be an ‘isolated incident.’

Police added that Crews was retired and lived alone.

“I’ve never known anybody that was murdered, taken so cold, and it was unnecessary,” Rhew added.
