HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — All five schools in Hopewell will switch from a traditional schedule to year-round schooling after a school board vote on Thursday. All but one school board member gave a thumbs up to year-round school.

Superintendent Dr. Melody Hackney says change is hard and risky but it will be worth it.

“We wholeheartedly believe without a shadow of a doubt that this is best for all, not those, but all Hopewell students,” Dr. Hackney said. The idea of year-round schools, which advocates have said would keep young minds active, has gained popularity nationwide. People who pushed for the proposal believe it will help those students retain what they’ve learned during the school year.

Pending a state grant, year-round schooling in Hopewell will start in the 2020-2021 school year.
