PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Authorities say no students were injured in a crash involving a school bus in Petersburg Thursday morning.

The crash happened in the 2400 block of County Drive just before 7:30 a.m. According to police, the car rear-ended the bus, caught on fire and smoldered the back of the bus. Police say about half of the car was under the bus.

Officials believe the driver of the car, who sustained facial injuries in the crash, did not see the bus because of the sun shining down on County Road.

The bus driver was hailed a hero for her quick thinking and getting the children to safety.  All students were checked out by crews on the scene and no injuries were reported.

The bus was transporting 17 students to Vernon Johns Middle School. Another bus picked up the students and took them to school.

Police say the driver of the car will be charged with traffic violations.
