Police working to identify man found dead in Petersburg

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Petersburg Police are working a death investigation in the 600 block of Pegram Street.

On Oct. 1, at 3:06 p.m., authorities received a call for a person down who was unresponsive. Once on the scene, police found an unknown black male on the ground. 

Petersburg Fire and Rescue crew members confirmed the individual was dead after arriving, according to a release from Petersburg Police.   

Petersburg Police released photos of the individual’s tattoos on Monday afternoon as they still work to identify the body. 

The deceased individual has tattoos on both of his arms, according to a release from Petersburg Police. The scales of Justice with the word “Justice” is tattooed on the man’s left arm and a crown with writing above and below it have been tattooed on his right arm. 

8News spoke with locals in the area who said they were shocked by the presence of the dozens of emergency vehicles that showed up at the scene. 

“Chaos, it was just literally chaos,” said one resident who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s a scary situation, you know, you don’t know what’s going on or what to expect when it’s right at your back door.” 

Another local, Curtis Hickman, says after seeing what happened with this investigation, he wants to be more aware of his surroundings.

“I know trouble there, I just go the other way,” said Hickman. “Certain places and certain spots I don’t go to.” 

The cause of death will be determined after the body has been examined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
