PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — A Virginia university is gaining national attention in an effort to preserve the legacy of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
The Tom Joyner Foundation, a product of radio personality Tom Joyner, has recognized Virginia State University as the April ‘School of the Month.’
Since 1998, the foundation has raised millions of dollars for students attending HBCUs.
Thomas Joyner, the son of prominent radio personality Tom Joyner, spoke with 8News about the purpose of the foundation.
“Like my father always says on the radio, we’re here to keep students enrolled at HBCUs,” Joyner said.
This ‘School of the Month’ campaign encourages raising awareness and funds for the school chosen.
Joyner’s nationally-syndicated show, ‘The Tom Joyner Morning’ show, hopes to reach people through radio and the internet to raise money for the university.
“All the funds that we are raising for this month’s campaign, 100 percent will be going towards Virginia State University,” Joyner said.
Joyner said the funds will be used for book scholarships, tuition fees and to offset outstanding fees students may have.
There are a variety of ways you can donate to the university.
Day of Giving is Tuesday, April 30. Text ‘VSUTrojans’ to ‘4144’ or visit TomJoynerFoundation.org to make a donation, or mail a check or money order.
