PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — A woman was taken to the hospital by air after suffering serious injuries on Tuesday following a two-vehicle crash in Petersburg.
Petersburg Police responded to County Drive and Stedman Drive at 4:09 p.m., police said, for a crash involving a semi-truck and a sedan.
The sedan reportedly crossed the double yellow lines and was struck by a semi-truck, going west, while traveling east on County Drive.
The driver of the sedan, an unidentified woman, was airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment with serious injuries, police said.
Petersburg City Public School leaders said one of the buses for Lakemont Elementary School had to take 42 students on board back to the school because of the crash.
James Wilson’s daughter was one of the students on board.
“We know our daughter, the latest she’ll be home is around 5:30, 6 o’clock, something’s wrong,” he said.
Wilson joined a host of other parents who had to drive to the school to pick up their children.
“As a father, I don’t think any parent wants to know that something’s wrong with their child so automatically you work off of instinct just to make sure your baby’s okay,” Wilson said.
The bus was not involved in the crash.
The semi-truck driver was not hurt in the crash.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
