Thousands celebrated Virginia’s LGBTQ community on Brown’s Island Saturday for VA Pridefest 2018.
Pridefest is the largest annual celebration in the commonwealth for the LGBTQ community. Saturday’s event was a culmination of a week’s worth of activities, as VA Pride works to unite LGBTQ communities across Virginia.
Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney also declared it ‘LGBTQ Pride Week’ in the River City.
“The key was really inclusion,” said McClain Wilkins, a festival attendee on Saturday. “You get to see a little bit of everyone here. You get to see kids with families that are LGTBQ. You get to see companies here in the Richmond area that support diversity and inclusion.”
Max Brown was one of those people celebrating the event alongside his family.
“I want to thank everyone for being here,” said Brown. “Its been a great day and to be surrounded by so many other members of the LGBT has been a wonderful experience.”
Virginia’s Governor, Ralph Northam, also spoke at the event.
“We are proud in Richmond and proud in Virginia to be progressive,” said Governor Northam. “We are innovative and most importantly we are inclusive.”
