Truck driver charged with reckless driving after crash causes fuel spillage, fire on McKinney Highway in Dinwiddie

DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 36-year-old man from Dinwiddie County is facing several charges after a tractor-trailer hauling diesel ran off the side of the road causing a fire and spillage.

Virginia State Police responded to the crash on Virginia State Route 40 near Hilltop Drive Tuesday morning. Their investigation revealed that the 2000 Sterling tractor-trailer carrying diesel tanks was heading west when it ran off the road. The trailer overturned and the fuel spilled.

Authorities told 8News on the scene that they believed the crash was caused by distracted driving. The driver, 36-year-old Jonathan A. Taylor was later charged with reckless driving, failure to maintain control and holding a cellphone while driving.

Cleanup is now underway to get everything spilled on the road cleared.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, as of 9:26 a.m., all east and west lanes remain closed. Drivers should expect delays.
