RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) —- Construction of the Virginia Women’s Monument continues in Capitol Square and on Tuesday, developers showed off some of the project’s first phase.

Granite slabs have been laid, along with a memorial wall honoring women who made history across the Commonwealth.

Mary Margaret Whipple, the vice chair of the Virginia Women’s Monument Commission, said the area around the memorial wall features seating and a place for people to eat.

“People can sit, rest and have their lunch and look at the beautiful glass wall which is etched with the names of 200 Virginia women,” Whipple said.

For the next phase,12 statues will be installed, featuring women who made major contributions to Virginia.

Plenty of work still needs to be done. The project needs to raise $800,000 more to commission the rest of the statues.

The project is expected to be completed by this time next year.
