‘We just have parties with costumes but not like this’: Brazilian woman experiences local Halloween

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A Brazilian woman visiting Richmond experienced the city’s biggest Halloween party with thousands of people on Hanover Avenue.

Adrienne de Silva has been in the country for a month and she found one of the best ways to celebrate Halloween in the City of Richmond on Wednesday.

She may be too old to trick-or-treat but that didn’t stop her from joining in on the fun.

“I thought it was a big deal like the movies you know? So, I really wanted to be here today,” Silva said. Silva’s host family opened her eyes to something different than what she’s used to in Brazil.

“We just have parties with costumes but not like this,” Silva said. A local resident, Abernathy Bland, also spoke with 8News about the Halloween festivities on Hanover Avenue.

“This is a time especially now, more than ever that community is important,” Bland said. “So, when community can rally around something exciting and something positive, let’s do that.”

It’s a memory Silva plans to hold on to.

“It’s something very cultural, I think it’s very important because it’s more for America, you know?” Silva said.
