RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — It’s tough to get enough sleep… but imagine trying to get comfortable in bed after having breast surgery.
“Everybody knows somebody with breast cancer.”
Marilyn Collins and Michelle Logan both had double mastectomies, so they know how complicated and painful recovery can be.
“You’re very uncomfortable, you can’t really sleep,” Collins said. “You have to sleep basically sitting up with your arms out like this because you have drains that come out of your side.”
They lived through it and are now helping others to do the same. These ladies created the “TaTaTopper” to make it easier for women to sleep on their stomachs and sides and get the rest they need to get better.
“You have to still get up with your kids and you still have to live your life,” Logan said. “If you’re not sleeping at night, you can’t take care of everybody else around you.”
Here’s how the TaTaTopper works: The foam topper goes on your mattress. There are removable inserts that let you customize the size of the hole you need for comfort.
“Tatas in the hole… and lie down!”
Breastfeeding moms have also found it to be helpful.
Collins and Logan said they didn’t set out to start a business, but once they saw the impact their creation had on others, it became their mission.
“Knowing that I survived this, and now I can help other women, is meaningful,” Collins said.
The women have already won start-up competitions and are spreading the word to women that help is out there.
“I was you four years ago. I get this,” Collins said.
“It’s okay to take care of yourself,” Logan said. “It’s all right to lay in bed, it’s all right to go to sleep and just get better.”
Collins and Logan got big news this week. You can now see the TaTaTopper on store shelves at the Walmart in Short Pump. Walmart joins about a dozen other local places that sell the product.
