Man charged in murder of stepbrother over plate of food at Super Bowl party

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WATN/WLMT) – Memphis police say a man has been arrested in an early morning double shooting Monday that left a man dead and woman fighting for her life.

Calvin Wilkins is charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, employment of a firearm during a dangerous felony, possession of a controlled substance, and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

MPD says officers were flagged down just before 1:15 A.M. Monday in the 1200 block of Favell in Whitehaven. They found a man and a woman shot. The man died at the scene, the woman was taken to Regional One in extremely critical condition.

According to a police affidavit, Wilkins got upset with his wife for making someone a plate of food at a Super Bowl party Sunday night. Wilkins then became verbally abusive and everyone except the two victims left the party.

Wilkins’ wife then received several voicemails from the victims. When she listened to the messages, she heard them pleading for their lives, then heard gunshots. She was also able to identify her husband’s voice on the recordings for investigators.

MPD has identified the man who died as Issacca Powell, Calvin Wilkins’ step-brother.

The woman who was shot is still being treated at a Memphis hospital.
