Man with stage 4 cancer wins $250K on lottery scratch-off

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WFLA/CNN) – A North Carolina man with stage 4 cancer is heading on the trip of a lifetime after winning the lottery.

Richard Beare of Charlotte recently won the top prize of $250,000 on a $5 scratch-off game called Carolina Black.

Beare says he rarely plays the lottery. He decided to buy the scratch-off a few weeks ago when his wife sent him to the store to buy a Powerball ticket.

The retired automotive mechanic was recently diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer. He says he’s going to use his lottery winnings to travel while he can.

“I want to travel while I can still enjoy myself. My wife has always wanted to go to Italy, since that’s where her descendants are from. Now I can take her,” he told lottery officials.

After taxes, Beare’s winnings were nearly $177,000.
