HONOLULU (KHON) – A man is facing federal charges after his alleged behavior forced a Hawaiian Airlines plane to divert.
According to court documents Paul Anthony Niederreiter was on a flight from Kahului, Maui to San Francisco on Saturday when he allegedly started yelling at the flight crew.
The documents say it started when he was told that a blanket would cost $10, then escalated when a flight attendant checked on him while he was in the bathroom.
According to court documents, the flight attendant told investigators Niederreiter “flung open the lavatory door while seated on the toilet with his shorts down to his ankles” and started yelling.
The situation eventually led the pilot to land the plane in Honolulu.
Niederreiter was released from behind bars on $20,000 bail but ordered to stay in a half-way house.
