SEVERN, Md. (AP) — A Maryland National Guardsman who died while trying to help a woman during a flash flood will be laid to rest.

The funeral for 39-year-old Staff Sgt. Eddison Hermond of Severn, Maryland, will be held Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to noon at The Church at Severn Run. Gov. Larry Hogan will speak during the service. Hermond will be buried at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

A Maryland National Guard spokesman says the funeral procession for the Air Force veteran will include military vehicles.

Floodwaters that caused devastating damage to buildings in the historic district of Ellicott City swept away Hermond on May 27.

In a statement last week, Hermond’s family said, “We are confident that his light will shine on.”
