100 people injured after overcrowded deck collapses in Maryland

GERMANTOWN, Md. (WRIC) — Nearly 100 people were injured after an overcrowded deck collapsed during a party in Maryland this weekend.

WJLA reported there were no serious injuries, but the event was labeled as a mass casualty event because of the number of people who were injured.

A Montgomery County fire official said the deck was unstable due to water damage and detached from the townhouse because it was supporting too much weight.

Officials say more than 33,000 people are injured each year due to porches and decks collapsing.

Here are some indicators that your deck or porch could suffer the same fate:

  • Rusted nails
  • Loose Boards
  • Unstable railings
  • Posts that might be leaning
  • Carpenter bee or termite damage
  • Clear signs of rotting or water damage underneath the deck
  • If your deck is more than 15 years old, you should consider replacing metal bolts and fasteners
