US could list giraffes as endangered species

(WFLA/CNN Newsource) – The United States is considering adding giraffes to the endangered species list.

Giraffe populations have plummeted in recent decades.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service said last week that it is planning a review to determine whether to list giraffes as endangered.

It follows a petition by conservation groups in 2017.

According to the petition, giraffes are dying due to poaching, legal sport hunting, drought and loss of habitat.

One conservation group estimates giraffe populations fell by as much as 40 percent over the last 30 years.

The National Rifle Association Hunters’ Leadership Forum is against listing giraffes as endangered.

Safari Club International is also opposed, saying the listing would cut revenue that can be used for habitat protection and anti-poaching efforts.
