CANA, Va. (AP) — An emergency management official in southwest Virginia says an elderly woman has died in a brush fire.

Emergency Services Coordinator Everett Lineberry told TV station WDBJ (http://bit.ly/2foNVB9 ) Friday afternoon that the fire near Cana had been extinguished, though crews were still on scene.

He described the victim as an elderly woman but said he couldn’t provide any additional information.

Carroll County has issued a ban on open burning, as have other localities across the state because of dry conditions and high fire danger.

The woman’s death comes as fire officials across the South are fighting stubborn wildfires that the U.S. Forest Service says have burned a total of 80,000 acres.
