Parents charged following school bus incident in Amelia County

AMELIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Amelia County Sheriff’s Office says two parents are facing charges after confronting a school bus driver. Two adult men were allegedly dissatisfied with how the driver handled a situation on the bus with students.

The Superintendent for Amelia County Public Schools, Dr. Jack McKinley, told 8News that the driver handled a student disciplinary issue on the bus after school on Tuesday. He says kids on the bus texted their parents about it.

“Couple of the parents around here was aggravated and upset about the whole situation,” said Maurice Scott, who lives in the neighborhood. He saw a caravan of police cars come down the street yesterday after the school bus came by.

McKinley says the parents confronted the driver at a bus stop on Wright Road, making threatening comments.

There were concerns about a firearm being drawn during the confrontation, but authorities have confirmed that this did not happen. McKinley says video from the school bus was reviewed and found that the claims were not substantiated.

Scott’s children don’t go to school in the county, but he’s concerned.

“You send your kids to school, the order form and thinking they’re safe and protected, and they’ll get an education and then the whole time you’re more worried about your kids at school than anywhere else,” he said.

8News has learned that the bus driver was new to the route and had started about a month ago. Since the incident yesterday, the driver has been switched to another route for the rest of the school year and will also receive additional training as needed.

Superintendent McKinley says the district is “monitoring the route day by day so students needs are met in terms of safety and comfort.”

The Sheriff’s Office says the adult males, Corey Rudge, 30, and Leslie Nelson III, 32, were charged with disorderly conduct in connection to the incident. They are expected to appear in Amelia General District Court on May 8th.
