RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Over 100 people gathered at the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University to show support for the victims of the Orlando shooting and for the LGBT community.
Members of the crowd lit candles and spoke words of encouragement. They expressed how important it is to stand together during tough times. They also talked about how this incident was not just a terrorist attack but a hate crime on the LGBT community.
Laura Kelly, a Richmond resident, said the hatred has to stop.
“This kind of hatred that starts with words,” Kelly said. “turns into hatred that’s acted out. We can’t keep doing this to each other. Love has to win.”
Diversity Richmond also plans to host a vigil Tuesday night outside their headquarters on Sherwood Avenue at 7 p.m.Find 8News on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram; send your news tips to iReport8@wric.com.
