PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Hundreds of students at Cool Spring Elementary School are walking around with brand new shoes and socks thanks to some Virginia State University student-athletes.

“I feel happy for getting these shoes,” Cool Spring Elementary student Brooklyn Dockery said.

As a part of their fundraising effort, VSU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee teamed up with Samaritan’s Feet International to bring 300 Cool Spring students new active shoes and socks.

The effort itself began last year and came to fruition Tuesday morning inside the school’s gymnasium.

“I love my new shoes!” one said.

The kids had nothing but smiles on their faces as the volunteers put the new gear on for them.

“Seeing them be so happy about it is just so cute to me,” VSU Volleyball player Ambria McBride said. “And I feel overjoyed and happy to be here because it’s such a blessing to give back and to help these kids have shoes.”

VSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Vice-President Jonathan Fuchs said it made him feel grateful to be able to give someone else a nice pair of shoes.

“The expression on the kid’s face, their attitudes and just the way that the shoes changed their lives, it was amazing,” Fuchs said.
