WASHINGTON (WRIC) — U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger was granted her “top-choice assignments” on Thursday when she was selected to serve on the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture for the 116th Congress.

The Foreign Affairs and Agriculture committees, according to the congresswoman’s office, were the committees Spanberger requested to be appointed to during her first term in Congress.

“I’m excited to have been selected to serve on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House Committee on Agriculture,” said Spanberger. “I requested these two committees as I believed they would, in tandem, present the best opportunity for me to serve our country and our district.”

Rep. Spanberger, a former CIA officer, believes her time as a federal agent will allow her a sharp, distinct perspective during discussions on foreign policy.

“As Congress examines innovative ways to bolster our foreign policy efforts and address the challenges we face internationally, I’m eager to bring my unique professional experience to the Foreign Affairs Committee’s discussions.”

Congresswoman Spanberger, representing Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, says her appointment to the House Agriculture Committee, which oversees the federal agriculture policy, will hopefully bring a boost to her district.

“Additionally, serving on the Agriculture Committee will be a privilege that I hope to use to the benefit of our district, focusing on agricultural policy to the benefit of our rural and agricultural communities, and food security issues to the benefit of our entire district.”
