Capitol Square reopens with limited access as Richmond monitors D.C. unrest

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — In a tweet Thursday morning, Virginia General Services said the gates at Capitol Square have reopened with limited access.

Capitol Square closed Wednesday as a pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

The Virginia State Capitol is closed until further notice in response to the demonstrations in DC. I’m told this is out of an abundance of caution and there is no active threat. pic.twitter.com/Onv3rFI1Mw

In order to enter Capitol Square, residents can use the gate at 9th and Bank streets or those located near the Washington Building or Patrick Henry Building.

Gov. Ralph Northam issued a ‘State of Emergency’ throughout Virginia in response to riots in Washington D.C.

Northam also announced a curfew in the Northern Virginia cities of Alexandria and Arlington at the request of those localities to last through Thursday morning.

At the request of @AlexandriaVAGov and @ArlingtonVA, I am declaring a 6PM to 6AM curfew in these jurisdictions, with limited exceptions.

I am also issuing a State of Emergency in Virginia, so we can continue to respond.

Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney said, “The City of Richmond is monitoring the status of ongoing unrest in our nation’s capital. Like other capital cities, we are also monitoring activity in and around Richmond. As always, please call 911 if you see any suspicious activity.”

The governor also deployed Virginia’s National Guard as well as 200 Virginia State Troopers to help respond in D.C.
