Ready for a swim? Here’s what you need to know about rip currents

News

(WRIC) — Memorial Day weekend is just about here, which means locals are heading to the beaches, pools, and rivers for some fun in the sun.

Stormtracker 8 meteorologist Travis Michels is reminding swimmers about rip current safety. Rip currents are naturally forming channels of water that pull water from the shore into the ocean.

These currents are powerful enough to pull out an experienced swimmer. So what do you do if you get caught in one? The first thing you want to do is relax, Michels said. You want to let the current pull you out, turn and then swim parallel to shore until you are out of the rip current.

If there’s a lifeguard around,  get their attention by signaling for help.

Happy swimming!
