Richmond family helps race fans feel welcome

Richmond is getting ready for race weekend and fans coming from all over are trying to find the best place to camp out.

Many people have found their favorite spot already, it’s at the Best house.

Queyomi Best and her family live right next to the Richmond Raceway.

“I love the smell of burning tire,” Best told 8News.

Someone that lives this close to the racetrack is lucky to love the smell of burning rubber.

As you inch closer and closer to the action, you will see houses right next to the track with parking signs in their yard.

“Every year we rent out space for people to come out and park. So parking won’t be expensive for them coming all the way out of town and have a good time. We try to make it easier for our guests,” Best said.

Best and her family are renting out parking spaces for the upcoming race weekend to people that want to save some money when tailgating or camping out.

The extra cash has helped Best out, she told 8News, “It’s helped us a lot for the past three years. We just got our new dog and mom is paying for a cruise.”

The gift of giving other people a good time is what Best and her family do it for.

8News spoke with Cathy Rehbein, a race fan from Pennsylvania, about the convenience of having a friendly, cost-efficient place to tailgate.

“It’s more convenient for us. We can park close and just walk to the gates and we have our food we can cook right here.”

Rehbein and her family have had a 21-year standing reservation.

“We like Richmond the best. It’s a nice track. When we used to come years ago, it was completely sold out for year and years,” said Rehbein.

Rehbein told 8News that the high prices could be attributed to fewer people in the stands.

“Over the years, they don’t sell out like they used to and it’s unfortunate. It’s sad to see the fan base pulling back.”

Best’s told 8News that her house always has a crowd.

“Usually our yard is so packed that we can’t get any more cars up in here,” said Best.

Best told 8News that the extra cash that her family makes for renting out their yard will help her for graduation and prom.

While the money is nice to have, Best told 8News that race weekend is about being with family and friends and having fun.
