RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond Spiders swimmer Hannah Gouger is just one of seven Spiders to qualify for the NCAA Championship in the program’s history.
“Personally this has been a goal to me since I was a freshman, so finally getting to achieve that goal and go to this meet was huge,” Gouger said.
She also became the first from her family to go to the NCAA’s. Gouger’s parents and sister also swam at the collegiate level.
“They were so excited,” Gouger recalled. “My sister swam here and went through the program with Matt and she was just so excited. She was like I never got to do this meet but you got to qualify so it’s like I get to go.”
Gouger hopes for a return to the NCAA’s next year and believes the Richmond program will continue to send more representatives.
She’ll also cherish, and the support from her teammates is something she’ll never forget.
“Even though they couldn’t come with me it felt like they were there the whole time,” she told 8News. “They were constantly texting me. They were along for the journey, they watched me online. I couldn’t have done it without them.”
