RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Baseball season is in full swing and the Richmond Squirrels are prepping for their first All-Star week.
50 banners went up all across the city Tuesday to promote the four-day celebration ending with the 2019 Eastern All-Star Game. The first Eastern League All-Star Game ever hosted in Richmond.
“We’re excited about just one of the biggest opportunities and events that this city will probably see this year,” Flying Squirrel’s General Manager Ben Rothrock said.
The game will feature the top stars from the Eastern League’s 12 teams.
The Eastern League All-Star week is presented by Genworth and takes place from July 7-10.
- July 7: Mayor Levar Stoney will kick off the week with a free event at Brown’s island featuring live music, food and more.
- July 8: Country music stars Big & Rich headline the All-Star Country Music Jam at Virginia Credit Union LIVE! at Richmond Raceway.
- July 9: The Eastern League Celebrity Home Run Derby takes off featuring stars from the sports and entertainment world.
- July 10: Festivities conclude with the 2019 Eastern League All-Star Game.
Local businesses told 8News they are excited for the All-Star week.
“I think it’s gonna be great for our business and the businesses around us,” Moore Street Cafe Owner Charlie Hughes said. “We’re breakfast, lunch and the businesses that are lunch and dinners will definitely see the impact that everyone coming into town will bring.”
Hughes said they looking forward to the hike they are expecting especially during times when they normally see less people.
“The busier the better. So you know, we’re excited,” Hughes said.
The Flying Squirrels say they are ready to showcase the city they call home.
