RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A local teacher who was named the 2019 National Teacher of the Year was welcomed back in RVA on Thursday with a celebration in his honor.

Rodney Robinson, a history teacher at Virgie Binford Education Center — located inside the Richmond Juvenile Detention Center — was chosen from a group of 57 award-winning teachers across the country.

Mayor Levar M. Stoney and RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras, who attended Thursday’s event, said every student deserves a teacher like Robinson.

Robinson, who spent 12 years teaching social studies at Armstrong High School, said his goal is to make sure the stories of people from all backgrounds are heard.

“This is my purpose,” Robinson said. “My purpose is not only to advocate for black men, all men of color, all women of color, but all students of America.”

Robinson will spend the next year traveling the country and sharing his mission.
