(WRIC) — Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) warned customers on Wednesday of a potential phone scam in which members are demanded to make an immediate payment to avoid having their electric service disconnected.

REC members said the callers claim the payment due is for services from the co-op.

Customers who receive any suspicious calls claiming to be REC should be aware of the company’s protocol.

REC’s members will not be contacted over the phone for missed payments and the company does not use any collection agencies.

Employees will not call REC customers to warn of an upcoming power disconnection due to a late or failed payment.

The company uses an automated call system in such cases.

Anyone contacted by a caller demanding immediate payment for REC should report the suspicious activity to local law enforcement.

If someone is uncertain that a call they received is truly from REC, members may call the electrical company directly at 1-800-552-3904 to confirm.
