Commonly prescribed antibiotics can cause potentially deadly ruptures, FDA warns

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The FDA is issuing a new warning about common antibiotics that 8News has been investigating for years.

The FDA now says studies show that commonly prescribed antibiotics like Cipro, Levaquin, and Avelox can increase the occurrence of ruptures in the main artery of the body called the aorta. These tears can lead to someone bleeding to death.

8News has been investigating these complaints since 2015. Some patients reported having serious neurological, and nerve damage. The FDA says doctors should stop prescribing these medications to patients who suffer from heart problems.
