Tractor-trailer catches fire after driving over mattress on I-95

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — All lanes remain closed on I-95 south between Willis Road and Route 288 (mile marker 63) after a tractor trailer caught fire Monday morning. Drivers are encouraged to use an alternate route and to expect delays.

All northbound lanes are also temporarily closed, although crews hope to reopen all lanes before the evening rush hour. Traffic is currently getting by on the shoulder.

Crews with Chesterfield Fire and EMS responded to the incident at roughly 9:20 a.m. and needed multiple hose streams to extinguish the fire. It took crews approximately one hour to mark the blaze under control.

The driver was able to escape without injury.

HAZMAT crews were called to assist with fuel that was leaking from the ruptured tank. Chesterfield Fire Marshals determined the fire started after the truck drove over a mattress that was in the roadway. They say the mattress got stuck under the cab and ignited.
