Truck passenger killed after helicopter crashes onto Florida road

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – One person has died after a helicopter suffered “catastrophic” engine failure and crashed into a road in Florida on Thursday.

The crash occurred on 50th Street and Palm River Road at about 2:20 p.m., according to 8News Sister Station WFLA.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said a piece of the helicopter’s rotator blades broke off and flew across the street, striking a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was headed north on 50th Street near Palm River Road, killing a passenger.

The passenger’s name has not been released, pending notification of kin, but authorities say he was the father of the driver.

The crash forced the closure of several streets in the area.
