Up & App ‘Em: Save money while shopping — without all the legwork

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The purchase or download of shopping apps last year went up 81 percent. The biggest reason why: consumers are looking to save money.

As shopping continues to trend toward mobile purchasing, the need for apps that can find you the cheapest price on millions of products is growing.

RetailMeNot calls itself a ‘coupon app,’ but it is much different than you may think.

This app and parent website compile a list of discount codes for nearly every store you can imagine. Users try the codes and will rate whether or not they work, saving you time and showing you codes that are proven to work. The app is fairly simple to use. Just search for the store or website you are shopping at and codes that may qualify for your purchase are brought right to your fingertips, delivering discounts from 5 percent to sometimes over 60 percent. If you’re looking to avoid paying retail price on anything, this is the app to help you achieve that goal.Click here to check out RetailMeNot.

Another new concept app called Paribus is a revolutionary idea to save you money AFTER you make a purchase. Once you sign up in the app, you can link your email and continue your shopping as normal. Meanwhile, Paribus works in the background. When you make a purchase online and get a receipt emailed to you, the software locks on to the price you paid. Then, when the price for that product drops, Paribus submits a request for a price adjustment on your behalf for the difference in price, effectively getting you the lowest price — even after the purchase.Click here to learn more about Paribus. This week on Good Morning Richmond, 8News meteorologist Tim Pandajis explores the app world. Tune in at 5:30 a.m. through Friday, February 26, or check WRIC.com for the latest installment in the ‘Up and App ‘Em’ series.
