(WRIC) — A former instructor at VCU will be on truTV’s ‘Paid Off with Michael Torpey’ this season.
Sean Collins-Smith graduated from VCU in 2010 with an undergraduate degree. He went back for graduate school in 2012.
After working for a media outlet in Richmond, Collins-Smith worked at the Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture in the Mass Communications track.
Having recently made a move to Los Angeles to be a film writer, Collins-Smith says he barely had time to settle in before having to fly back to the east coast to film ‘Paid Off.’
‘Paid Off’ gives three college grads the chance to test the value of their education in a fun, fast-paced trivia contest.
One lucky winner will have the chance to win the sum of their debt in cash.
Collins-Smith told 8News that the most exciting part was having the possibility of paying off all of his student debt.
“I spent five years at VCU as a double major, and then another two getting my graduate degree,” said Collins-Smith. “So I had about $78,000 in total debt.”
Probably a quarter of that amount is interest he added.
Now after 10 years he could have the chance to win the money to pay it off.
“The fact that I could go on this trivia show with an opportunity to wipe the slate clean was just mind-blowing to me,” Collins-Smith said.
The air date is May 15th at 10 p.m. on truTV.
This season includes a ‘live lightning round’ where viewers have the chance to call in and answer trivia questions to help pay off their debt for up to $3,000.
