NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A 10-year-old boy is in serious condition after being shot in the head while leaving a birthday party Wednesday evening.

A 42-year-old man was also shot in the leg in the same incident.

Police were called to Auburn Pointe apartments in the 400 block of Crescent Way just after 8 p.m. for gunshots heard in the area.

Police found the 10-year-old boy at the scene of the shooting suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police say the 42-year-old was taken to the hospital in a vehicle that got into an auto accident on the way. He’s expected to be OK.

The driver of the vehicle finished taking the man to the hospital following the accident, before returning to the scene. Police didn’t have additional information about the accident.

No suspect information in the shootings has been released at this time.

“Time and time again I’m behind the camera stressing about the gun violence,” said Newport News Police spokesman Brandon Maynard. “It’s got to stop. 10 years old, at a birthday party, senseless crime it’s awful. It’s got to stop and it’s got to stop now.”
