NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The grand opening of Norfolk’s Ikea is still a month out, but officials are providing a first look at the new store.
The 331,000 square foot Ikea store is located just down the street from Norfolk Premium Outlets. It will feature the largest solar rooftop array in Hampton Roads, charging stations for electric vehicles and a 354-seat restaurant.
Ikea officials are providing a tour of the construction progress to members of the media on Thursday.
Inside the store, newly-hired workers are assembling furniture displays and room settings ahead of the grand opening. Ikea says they’ve hired 270 workers and had over 10,000 applicants.
Employees are still putting together the 42 room display sets and four model home interior displays.
“A lot of our rooms are modeled after some local needs, so a lot of our lofts in Norfolk, for example, have some outdoor living space, so we included that,” said Ikea Norfolk Loyalty Manager Michelle Stephenson.
The grand opening is slated for April 10, just five weeks away. Many citizens are excited about the opening.
“It’s been so positive. In fact, if we forget to take our name badges off when we are out at the grocery store people are like ‘you work for Ikea? when is that opening?’ and get really excited,” said Stephenson.
They say they’re prepared for the crowds on opening day and have set up traffic control and overflow parking near the Norfolk Premium Outlets with a shuttle service.
