ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Authorities in Albemarle County confirmed on Thursday the identities of the two people who died as a result of last week’s flooding.

The couple, Robert Gilges, 82, and Carol Gilges, 79, were on their way home in Albemarle County on May 30 when they were caught in a flash flood in the 900 block of Old Ballard Road, according to a release from Albemarle County Police.

The couple, along with their vehicle, were swept off the road into Ivy Creek.

Search and rescue crews were initiated immediately in an attempt to find the elderly couple.

The bodies of Robert and Carol Gilges were found along Ivy Creek on May 31 and June 5, by rescue personnel.

Accidental drowning has been determined as the couple’s cause of death by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia.
